While there are many great towns and beaches across Halkidiki’s three peninsulas, the town of Nikiti is a true hidden gem for tourists and locals alike. Located on the northern end of Sithonia peninsula, it is easily accessible by car from Thessaloniki Airport (about an hour drive). The main draw of Nikiti is its sandy beach that stretches nearly 4 kilometers. During your stay, visitors will enjoy stunning views of the warm, turquoise waters.
Most visitors spend a majority of their trip at the beach where they can enjoy activities such as sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling. The beach has white sand and is extremely clean. It has been awarded with the coveted status as a “blue flag” beach which represents beaches that meet a strict set of guidelines for environmental protection, accessibility, and safety. The water is shallow in most places with calm water making it perfect for families with children.
When you’re not at the beach, Nikiti offers lots of activities including visiting the historic old town (which hosts traditional arts and craft markets on Friday mornings), checking out the Sofronios Basilica (a 1600-year-old church built at the beginning of the 5th century AD) with its impressively preserved mosaic tile floor, or enjoying great diving sites at the nearby Castri and Kalogria beaches. If you are visiting during the month of July, you might even catch the Toroneos Swimming Marathon as participants swim 26 miles from the Kassandra peninsula and finish in Nikiti.
While Nikiti is a small town of about 2,700 people, the population surges to over 20,000 during the summer months. Because of the number of tourists that visit Nikiti, the town has invested heavily in developing the coastal areas. The northern end of the beach hosts a marina with a popular promenade that runs the length of the beach. The promenade is the perfect place to explore the many shops, restaurants, bars and taverns, cafes, and luxury accommodations.
There are numerous options when it comes to dining including seafood and pizzerias. Many of the restaurants and bars along the promenade have direct access to the beach where you can enjoy your meal or drink with stunning views of the water. While you are visiting, don’t forget to get a taste of the famous Nikiti honey that is produced locally. Nikiti has a vibrant nightlife as people flock to the beach to take in the sunsets. If this sounds like an amazing place to visit, you might consider adding a trip to Nikiti to your next Greece itinerary.
