Nea Potidea

Nea Potidea is where Kassandra begins. The peninsula is joined to the mainland by a strip of land a kilometre wide, and a canal cut through it in 1930 lets boats pass between the two gulfs. The village sits on the canal with the ruins of the Byzantine wall of ancient Potidea around it, and it has what no other village in Halkidiki has: a beach on the Thermaikos gulf to the west and a beach on the Toroneos gulf to the east, five minutes apart, so there is always a sheltered one whichever way the wind blows.

The east beach is the family one, long and sandy with sunbeds and tavernas; the west beach is wilder and faces the sunset. The canal itself is lined with fish tavernas where the boats tie up. The village is small and quiet in the evening; Nea Moudania with its market and cafés is ten minutes away, Sani and Afytos twenty minutes down the coast.

Villas here are on the coast either side of the canal and in the village. Fifty minutes from Thessaloniki airport, it is the shortest transfer on Kassandra and a good base for seeing both peninsulas. Ask us for a shortlist with your dates.
