Nea Moudania

Nea Moudania is the first town you reach in Halkidiki and the one the peninsulas run on. It is a real town of ten thousand people with a port, a Saturday market, banks, a hospital, and a long town beach with a promenade of cafés. It is not a resort, and that is its advantage: prices are local, everything is open all year, and Kassandra and Sithonia are each half an hour away.

Stay here if you want to see both legs of Halkidiki in one holiday, if you arrive late and leave early, or if you like a town in the evening more than a village. The beach is sandy and organised, with the swimming pool complex at one end and the marina at the other; the boat to Skiathos leaves from the port in summer. The market on Saturday morning is the best in Halkidiki for fruit, cheese and olives.

From Nea Moudania the Petralona cave and its museum are twenty minutes inland, the Kassandra canal at Nea Potidea ten minutes south, Sani and Afytos twenty minutes further, and the Sithonia beaches from Gerakini onwards forty minutes east. Thessaloniki airport is forty-five minutes on the motorway, the shortest transfer in Halkidiki.
